Justice & Peace Studies Visiting Researcher Presents Webinar on “Humanism”

On March 28th, Justice & Peace Studies (JUPS) visiting researcher, Dr. Fernando Garcia-Naddaf, presented a webinar on “humanism” titled “Decolonizing Peace Education: Lessons from a Humanist Perspective in South America.” His talk shed light on how the Humanist Movement in South America is challenging traditional approaches to peace education through a decolonized, holistic framework. The speaker emphasized the power of non-formal education spaces, non-Western epistemologies, and a focus on structural violence as key elements in building a more transformative model of peace.

The presentation drew from examples across the Global South, illustrating how grassroots efforts are not only addressing the root causes of conflict but also fostering personal and collective change. Attendees were encouraged to rethink Critical Peace Education beyond Western paradigms and to embrace alternative ways of knowing and being.

The event offered a compelling call to action for educators, students, and activists to view peace as an active pursuit of justice, healing, and systemic transformation.
