Theories or Theologies of Justice and Peace (concurrent required course): At least one elective course must emphasize theories or theologies of justice and peace. This requirement can be satisfied through an elective course cross-listed with JUPS or from course offerings in the PHIL or THEO Departments. This is not an additional required course, but a concurrent one; students should consult with a JUPS advisor. Potential courses for this requirement include:
- Theologies of Social Justice
- The Church and the Poor
- Catholic Peacemaking
- Just War Theory
- Theories of Justice
- Struggle and Transcendence
- Black Liberation Theology
- Catholic Social Teaching
- Ethics and Theories of Justice and Peace
- Faith, Social Justice, and Public Life
Social Action Course: There are several ways that JUPS Majors can engage in meeting the requirement for “Social Action.”
- Take a CBL-designated course (typically 3 or 4 credits) offered by any Georgetown Department/Program in the fall/spring/summer semesters. You can search for these courses by selecting the attribute for CBL.
- Take JUPS 4951, a 2-week faculty-led course “Social Transformation in South Africa” (3 credits). This course will count towards one JUPS core elective AND fulfill the social action requirement.
- Sign up for UNXD 1130 CBL Social Action (fall or spring semester), a 1-credit course through Georgetown University’s Center for Social Justice (CSJ).
- Sign up for UNXD 1030 CBL Intersections of Social Justice (summer term). This is a 1-credit online, asynchronous course of the Center for Social Justice (CSJ).
- Sign up for the CALL Internship seminar (+Internship) UNXD2250.
- A deep, immersive community-engaged co-curricular commitment through Georgetown University, such as the: 1) GOVX 4000 (Prison Reform Project); 2) Andretta Fellowship; 3) the Education and Social Justice Fellowship; or 4) the Kalmanovitz Initiative fellowship.
