Major in JUPS

Major Requirements

The Justice and Peace Studies (JUPS) major at Georgetown comprises eleven courses: five core courses and six electives. JUPS majors are expected to take the core courses at Georgetown.

Core Courses

• JUPS1010: Introduction to Justice and Peace Studies
• JUPS2010: Nonviolence Theory and Practice
• JUPS2030: Peacebuilding and Conflict Transformation
• JUPS3040: Research Methods in Justice and Peace
• JUPS3030: Capstone (Completed by taking three 1-credit classes in senior year.)

Electives

• JUPS majors are required to take six electives selected from courses offered in JUPS or from those designated as x-listed or cross-listed. Four of these electives should be taken in-house with the JUPS department, and two courses out of the six electives can be from JUPS x-listed or cross-listed courses. One of these electives should satisfy the requirement for Theories or Theology of Peace and Justice. 
• JUPS Majors must also fulfill the Social Action Requirement, which may also be taken concurrently as an elective course. There are several ways that this requirement can be satisfied.

Declaring the JUPS Major

Students ordinarily declare the JUPS major in Fall or Spring semester of sophomore year.  The prerequisite is being enrolled in or the completion of the gateway course JUPS1010: Introduction to Justice and Peace Studies.  The Major Declaration process includes first completing a short application form and completion of the “Major Declaration Form” available from the Dean’s Office.  After completing the application form, students receive an approval email and are assigned a JUPS Faculty Advisor.

Study Abroad

JUPS Majors who study abroad may transfer up to two courses to count as electives toward the major, with the approval of the JUPS Program Director.  Before studying abroad, students must review their study abroad proposal and courses for consideration with the Program Director at least a few weeks ahead of the semester deadlines for submitting study abroad forms. After returning, students then submit to their Dean the “Transfer Credit Form” available from the College Dean’s Office.  

Transfer Students

Transfer Students are encouraged to meet with the Program Director for evaluation of the courses taken from prior institutions and possible courses that may carry over to the Major. The application for the JUPS Major can be completed in the first semester of the junior year while taking the core course, JUPS1010: Introduction to Justice and Peace Studies.
