JUPS Student Research and Travel Fund

To provide additional support to JUPS students, the Program will, on a case-by-case basis, evaluate a limited stipend for activities such as travel expenses, workshops, conference presentations, unpaid internships, research-related travel, etc. To be considered for the fund, students must complete a Google Form (linked below). JUPS Major and Minor students seeking support to attend a conference may submit a proposal (including the name of the conference/organization, the title of the student’s research/paper or other modes of participation, and a working budget for travel and registration) to the JUPS Director at least 3-4 weeks before the conference. Students attending conferences at which they are delivering a paper or a portion of a panel presentation on research related to the Justice and Peace Studies Program courses and/or mentored by faculty in Justice and Peace Studies will receive priority consideration.

Awards

The McSorley Award

The McSorley Award for excellence in scholarship and service in the field of justice and peace studies is presented each year by the Program on Justice and Peace (JUPS) to a graduating senior in Justice and Peace Studies nominated by the Program Director. The award is named for the late Reverend Richard McSorley, S.J., a tireless lifelong advocate for peace and justice, author of eight books on peace issues, and founder of the Center for Peace Studies at Georgetown University. From his time as a prisoner of war during WWII, through his close association with the Kennedy family, in marching with Martin Luther King Jr., and by teaching courses such as “The Nonviolent Revolution of Peace,” Rev. McSorley distinguished himself as a scholar and activist with a principled commitment to positive change. Rev. McSorley passed in 2002, but not before leaving an inspiring legacy of intellectual engagement and nonviolent action in the pursuit of justice and peace. The McSorley Award honors this rich tradition of dedication to just causes through research, scholarship, and service.
