Justice and Peace Studies Professor Dr. Sheherazade Jafari Is Peacebuilding Facilitator in DC Community

For the past year, Professor Dr. Sheherazade Jafari has worked as a facilitator with the DC Peace Team (DCPT), training members of the community to become nonviolent agents of sustainable peace and justice. With the increased presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in D.C. and the deployment of the National Guard at least through 2029, organizations such as DCPT are working to ensure the city’s residents understand their rights and develop strategies to protect themselves.
The organization currently offers programming focused on restorative justice, community violence intervention, equity initiatives, and peace education. Dr. Jafari highlighted that these tactics of nonviolence and de-escalation are available to everyone and helpful in a variety of situations, whether that be in campus life, the workplace, among family, or during political protests. “[These skills] are not merely aspirational or utopian ideals. They can (and are being) applied right here, right now, in our own backyards,” Dr. Jafari wrote. Read more about Dr. Jafari’s work.
