Social Transformation in South Africa Class Summer 2024

This unique interdisciplinary student cohort at Georgetown University stands apart in its approach to learning, as it is the only program where students from all disciplines—ranging from the College of Arts & Sciences, the Business School, the School of Foreign Service, Global Health, and Nursing—travel and learn together in South Africa. Led by two rotating faculty members each year, this Community Based Learning (CBL) course immerses students in real-world experiences with community partners, allowing them to reflect on and deepen their understanding of complex societal issues, with a specific focus on learning about the history and lasting impact of apartheid.

Unlike traditional classroom learning, the pedagogy of this course emphasizes hands-on engagement and collaborative problem-solving across academic disciplines. In South Africa, students not only engage with local communities but also explore the country’s complex history, including the apartheid system and its enduring social and political implications. The dynamic structure of this cohort fosters an inclusive, immersive experience that promotes both personal growth and a deep commitment to social impact. By actively engaging with community partners and leveraging their interdisciplinary knowledge, students emerge as leaders equipped to address global challenges in innovative ways, with a deeper understanding of justice and reconciliation in post-apartheid South Africa.
